NR2366 / National Museum of Natural History / Proposal

Proposal for a new natural history museum placed in the Botanical Garden in the center of Copenhagen.

The idea builds on the TIMELINE as a key to understanding nature.

The TIMELINE streches for about 700 meters as an unbroken chain through the park with four exhibition halls on the way.

The journey through time begins with a descent into the first hall underground at the time of the formation of the universe and Planet Earth. The next part is a slow rise through the first billions of years to an ascent through the lake in the park at the time when the first landbased plants appear and long after life has started to flourish in the oceans. From here the journey continues to the second hall displaying plants and primitive animal life. The third hall - elevated above ground - is inhabited by dinosaurs and flying insects. The last stretch of the timeline takes the visitor to the world of mammals in the fourth and largest hall, after which it descends into modern times with the appearance of Homo Sapiens and finishes off with a peak into the future of a changing environment.

The exterior of the TIMELINE has a reflecting surface that mirrors the sky, the tree tops and the surrounding city into the garden.
